Go ahead, live a little

A compact, definitive item of luxury. The cabinet on a stand form has always felt to me to be a bit of unnecessary luxury. Practical has its place. This little cabinet sets it aside. It focuses on other things. And in the end, that is why I’m drawn to it. Constant modesty makes Jack a dull boy.

Slow down and take a long, close look. The details are stunning. The continuous flow of the grain between the doors and into the drawer. The hand-carved sycamore knobs meticulously shaped to fit softly between your index finger and thumb. The way the bevel on the outside frame directs your eye back into the front of the cabinet. The crisp, soft feel of the corners and edges. The legs of the stand are frozen like a ballerina, constantly on point.

There is an innate delicacy due to its size. This solid wood cabinet is bulletproof due to the traditional joinery that holds it together. The top mitered corners are held in place with sturdy L-shaped tenons, the divider between the doors and drawer is held in place with a sliding dovetail and the hand cut dovetails create a strong little drawer. The cabinet doors have a Baltic birch plywood core, faced with a walnut, shop-sawn veneer. The stand has through tenons holding the supports and the legs held in place with mortise and tenon joinery.

Finished with a hand applied wiping varnish.
