An Optical Illusion to Hide a Pipe
This bench was built for a family in Amherst, Massachusetts who was looking to take an underutilized space along a wall in their kitchen for more storage space. The space had a kids' table that was now ignored by the young people in the house. It was time for that corner of their kitchen to move into adulthood.
The corner has a heating pipe that does a funny little dive further away from the wall before it goes through the floor. The corner of the bench lifts it skirt on the side to allow for the pipe to go under it. My intention was to create an optical illusion in the corner where the bench sits close to the wall to make the asymmetry less noticeable.
The bench is constructed of cherry and finished with a wipe-on varnish.
